What do you need to start making your own cards

To make your own cards an idea is usually enough to get you started.

What you do after that is up to you. Everyone has a different style, that's what make your cards special.

Our list below is just few of the many different items you could use to make cards. The great thing about making your own is you choose what you use and you decide how your card will look.

  • Card (assorted colours and sizes)
You can make your own cards simply by cutting card to the size you want and folding the card. You don't have to fold the card down the middle cards can have more than one fold. It is up to you. (TOP TIP: Check you have an envelope that fits your card before you get to far. It will make life a lot easier.)
  • Envelopes (assorted colours and sizes to match cards)
Don't forget the envelope! When you make your card you will usually want a nice envelope for it. (TOP TIP: Do remember that not all colours can be sent in the post, so bright and fun might not work in the mail!)
  • A selection of Art stamps
Art stamps are good as you can reuse them again and again. You can even change the colours, if you are feeling adventurous you can even put different colours on different parts of the stamp to get a multi-colour print from your stamp! (TOP TIP: A lot of stamp art has a copyright which prevents you from selling your cards. You can only make cards with them that you give away as gifts.)
  • Ink pads (assorted colours)
You can have a lot of fun with ink pads. Keep the cover on them when you are not using them to prevent them drying out and you will get a lot of use out of them for your money.
  • Art punches
Art punches are great as you can use them over and over. You will find that if the paper is to thin or the card is to thick that you will have a few problems but on nice card you will end up with lots of shapes. You can sometimes find pre punched card shapes available to buy so do check to see how much you might use a art punch before you buy it. (TOP TIP: You can use all the bit from most art punches, both part make nice card decorations so don't through the spare bit away.)
  • Glitter (assorted colours)
Now you might need glue as well but you can get glitter glue and I have even got glitter glue for my hot glue gun! (TOP TIP: Put a fold in a piece of paper then unfold it again. Gently tap the spare glitter off your project on to the paper. Once you have done that you can pick up the paper with the fold in it and use the fold like a funnel to guide the glitter into the middle of the paper and then tip it back in to your glitter pot, ready to be used again.)
  • Coloured card shapes
Very useful as you can get big shape that you would not normally be able to get using Art punches. You can also get lots of colours and sizes that might mean you don't need to buy a Art punch, you have to work out what is best for you. I would look at how many you need and the cost of pre cut shapes compared to your own Art punch. (TOP TIP: Different sizes and/or colours of the same shape can be used to get good effects.)
  • Felt tip pens
Pens are always useful, different colour cards need different colour pen to show up on them. (TOP TIP: You might even need to get metal ink style pens for very dark coloured cards like black and brown. Silver and Gold are most common but metallic Blue is also a nice colour.)
  • Colour pencils
Pencils can be better for colouring in sections of your project, they don't leave hard lines or make the paper wet like felt pens. (TOP TIP: Using a nice share pencil colour using the side, not the tip, of the pencil. With more pencil making contact with the paper you will get nicer colouring with less lines)
  • Craft knife and cutting board
PLEASE TAKE CARE. Craft knifes are often basically VERY sharpe scalpels but are very useful for cutting out 3D Decoupage. (TOP TIP: Do not cut very thick card or flex the blade, you must be careful to to break the blade also cutting thick card will blunt your blade. Once it is a bit blunt cutting will not be as clean and easy so replace your bland once in a while for best results.)
  • Embossing powders and curing equipment
  • Stickers
  • glue
  • sticky pads or silica glue for decoupage style cards
  • material off cuts, feathers, beads or other tactile materials to make your cards more interesting
  • old birthday cards
  • wall paper borders
  • wrapping paper
  • or just about anything you fancied to design your cards
